How to Play "Unbelievably" Fast on the Violin: Paganini's Magical Secret / Lesson 7a
"Unbelievably Fast" is no hollow promise. This "magical" lesson of Paganini's was handed down through The Romantic School of Music and has been one of its most prized possessions. This 3 part series of lessons will allow you to break free from the normal limitations of speed, and at the same time, improve your quality of tone. It's what you need. :)
And yes, I was reminded that Paganini used an almost idential lesson for the guitar, and even though I'm teaching this on the violin, the concepts apply to both instruments.

"The White Violin" /Chapter 26 of "Two Trees" from "The Luthier's Diary Series" by Kevin Lee Luthier
Ok, great lesson, I do a similar approach on guitar, quick bursts between longer notes. One question, on violin, how does this movement translate to bowing, because it really seems like a different movement?
I do apologize for the long wait. My life has not been my own the past couple/few months. I will be covering that in depth in the next installment of this lesson. = hopefully very soon!
but then i drop the violin. i suppose i must get a shoulder rest. thank you for all of these, and i am glad your neck is better, however i am thinking of getting one of those braces for myself, and attaching the tailpin to it. i wish i could just bolt it to my neck, somehow, because the whole reason i play with a bent wrist is simply to support the instrument.
The right shoulder rest can make it feel like it is "bolted" to your neck, though once it feels secure, most prefer at least a little freedom. :)
My dear, you are such a precious master luthier. I enjoy your style and your love for these beautiful works of art. Thank you.
Make one with a similar sound an I will believe you. The difference between the two is mountanious. What you tell is common knowledge. What you do not know is the rest.
Thank Kevin, wonderful presentation!
Tripoli powder in water will shift the dirty gunge and rosin without damaging the varnish .
Excellent. You.
Thank you for pointing out the Peterson StroboPLUS HDC tuner! I've used this In my early lessons here but my family and frienfs also use it to help tune their various stringed instruments.
I absolutely love these flash cards! Long before I had even picked up a violin, I had gone through all of these flashcards. Thank you so much for this!
3 years on, how are you doing at this point?
Throughout my career, I played my '72 Sergio Peresson. A copy of a Guarneri, it was before he increased production with luthiers building his instruments, and Sergio would do the assembly and staining. A powerful and lovely sound. I sold it when my wife got sick. One day, I hope to find a similar quality. When that day comes I will contact you.
Have you heard of the old masters using horsetail plants as sandpaper??
Yes, first in the early 1990's at violin making school, and quite a few makers swear by it. Yet, even though it grows naturally in my valley below the violin shop, I have only used it on a couple of my instruments, because in my hands, steel wool with the proper backing seems to fit the bill for me. Yet, everyone's fingers and hands are different. Thanks for watching! :)
Any new videos coming
Yes. After the death of my mother a few months ago and taking care of all of her affairs, I should FINALLY have time to make videos again (I'm working on one now). Making instruments for my customers has always been my highest priority and I'm finishing a viola this week for Paul Aguilar. To the rest of you who have been waiting for videos, Thank you so much for your patience!!!!!

I did like their commercials, especially The Man Your Man Could Smell Like. :) Thanks for watching!

Your vídeo help us on focusing the sciency behind craftsmanship!
The art of Stradivarius and Guarnerius was lifting science and art to even higher levels by putting the two together.
I realized the great secret Cremonese Masters was the varnish application, specially Stradivari, then wood affects little compaired others luthiers at that time!
Everything affects the tone and beauty of a master instrument, and both the wood and the varnish, and how they are carved and applied are two vey large factors! Thanks for watching.
Owo! You really goals the summit...thank you so much!
your are so welcome / thanks for watching!
Question: If the Nuy is on there with Hide Glue, can't you soak the hide glue with a bit of water to soften it? I like that dial gauge you rigged up to measure the scoop of the fingerboard. Two Trees is a good book. I enjoyed it.
There are times that water can be used to soften hide glue joints, yet the water can also warp the wood and cause issues with the varnish. Also, once the skill is acquired, look how quick the job is done with no after-effects. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Fascinating, especially about the thickness part.
Everything about violin making has always been "fascinating" to me. :)
@@kevinleeluthier I put a clip of myself, hand blown glass artist Venezia style learned as an elective in college many years ago. Many parallels to the violin shops though completely different. I first saw at age of 15, glass factory wow. I'm jealous I wish I could play the fiddle!
@@MckayStradivarius Never too late! Also, even though I mention blowing glass in the novel "Two Trees," I'm still learning = it's never too late for me also. :)
Your explanation about filing is very good! You really do fine work, I must say. In many machine shops, they have a ball tumbler that could be used to clean up all the burrs on the tuner arm, but it requires finer tumbling stones. Of course, each additional operation adds cost to the part, so that's why they don't do it (I bet). Coming from a guitar background, I live and die by fine tuners. Thanks for the clue about the Soap as lubricant. My favorite is the Otto low-mass fine tuning tailpiece. For refurbishing the threads on the fine tuner, I would use a thread gauge to discover the thread pitch and then use the proper size thread die to chase the threads and clean them up. Of course not everyone has such tools or knows how to use them.
Thanks for your comments. I'll have to share how much I truly do love tools when I continue with my tour of the violin shop videos. :)
You’re right. Older people CAN learn to play the violin. I started when I was in my mid-58. I practised with great enthusiasm for 2-4 hours a day. Was accepted into a string ensemble on my 60th birthday and had played in a public concert with them since. I have music background in voice and piano so that definitely helps accelerate the process of learning 😅. The most important step is to start.
I prefer simplicity myself. The ornamentation you do is truly beautiful, but that is just not my thing. I like a simple violin that just sounds awesome. No antiquing, just "regular" varnish, smooth pegs, etc. You can't hear the ornamentation on a recording (in my opinion). But that's me.
That thing turned out gorgeous, absolutely stunning 3d flame on the maple parts after the polish! Loved the narrative explaining each step too as well as the playing part at the end, I watched the entire thing twice. I fix guitars as a hobby and am always absolutely blow away by the techniques, knowledge and materials you violin guys use for work like this. We generally deal with Polyurethane on our side of the Luthiers genre ... you can basically windex that stuff and it will shine like a diamond without hurting the finish, sometimes in the rare case of a "good" or expensive guitar nitrocellulose lacquer with which you have to be a little more careful but you can get away with a slightly damp cloth with hand soap and it will be just fine. Fingerboards we can use lighter fluid (Naphta) and Linseed oil ... it's basically idiot proof. Stuff like you did here with the cleaners and polish knowing how careful you have to be with the instruments and their varnish (and the staple/sound post ... another good reason to leave the strings on) to avoid ending up ruining the instrument .... This is true mastery in my opinion! Both enticing and humbling to watch, thank you.
Omg your a trooper, you went through it without painkillers, I can't believe your voice was perfect after surgery, it's been 9 days and I still have an altered voice and food isn't going down properly. Ty for doing your video
Hang in there! I have other parts of my spine that DO require pain killers upon occasion. Also, I can swallow so much better now that the screws and plate that were behind my throat and in front of my spine are gone, so in a way, I'm glad the first surgery failed. = my optimistic side talking. :)
totally wrong, the side of the G string is lower than the E string....
We must be saying the same thing in two different ways, because the G string swings wider and definitely requires more clearance = there needs to be more scoop in the fingerboard (is this what you mean by lower?), and in addition to that, the G string is held higher above the fingerboard at both the nut and the bridge ends. Thanks for watching!
Let a violin age and wear naturally! Imperfections are beautiful. What repairs and touch-ups she did earlier to her violin were like plastic surgery.
I understand your feelings, yet my customers look at the "art" of a master violin so differently, and having experience "both sides" I try to make each customer as happy and fulfilled as possible. There are also some "natural" wear patterns and imperfections that just don't look right, especially when using some shoulder rests/pads, etc. = A "perfect" violin, or a "perfectly beautiful" violin in it's own way, that is the question. :)
Exquisite!
Guarnerius non Guarneri plutôt,c’est stradivari qui a édité des étiquettes de son nom en latin !!!!!!
Jofeph Guarnerius fecit Cremone anno 17..

courage and respect.. I did not knew for the spine
the art of learning increment's
This seems shamefully. I knowingly put my fiddle through a process I think of as a natural stress. It takes time and work. Let's think of the already pleasant tensions placed upon the article. Some of which are dictated by the carved grains and, most of which are torqued by the string tensions into that system of play and tune. I think playing, setting the instrument on wall, thumping and stout finger tapps upon the joints with several re-sets and string changes over a time can make a newer item sing like an old stump. Also, newer items are more closely controlled in manufacture than those of old. Too ra ooh ra ehh?
Scary that there are "luthiers" today using Titebond to repair vintage instruments. Sure, it holds now, but decades down the road the wood will likely splinter when repairs are attempted.
I would go out on a thin limb and say that some of the tone quality of these fine old violins is due to the artistic musicians who’ve played them..and the fine bows they use.
I would love to be able to afford a fine violin or viola by this man. He’s so dedicated and passionate about his work.
Thank you so much for your teaching, Sir. That is helpful.
I loved watching these two. They know what they’re doing. I think I favor the Gypsy violin. I’d love to hear her play some Gypsy jazz on it.

Anything wrong with soaking it in water?
I don't understand how a person could confuse a violin and a voice. Violins cannot say words.
I was disgusted with the costs of scrapers so I go to thrift stores and buy high quality paring knives for 50 cents to $1.00. They are wonderful.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
You are the best!!!
Tbis video is very hekpful to me. I do appreciate the effort you put into making it for us. My old violin has rosin that has assimilated inot the varnish. I read Two Trees and I liked it very much. Hey that is a good idea you have for cleaning the inside of the violin.
Hi, nice video. I'm pretty sure the convex arching on the back side of the ribs of the instrument is a result of deformation, isn't it ? endping and neck heel being pulled by the string tension, in many instances this effect is mirrored on the top side of the ribs, which end up being concave rather than flat.
